Light and scale model

Through the process of experimentation and model making . With my accumulated knowledge of light and structure. i have use these understandings to create my light and scale model. created a building that is both Utilitarian and paying attention to  aesthetic. Patterns were carved into the wall allowing interesting shadows to form when exposed by a light source.

Materials used:

- corrugated cardboard
-aluminium foil to create human figure
- wood: used to create the roof ceiling
- tracing paper: to create a opaque wall

process

To construct this model the dominant material i have used was corrugated cardboard, i have cutted out pieces of this material from boxes i could have found in the house, to make the dimensions of the house. To allow light to come through the building i have created linear window panes, as well as patterned window panes on the side of the walls to allow light to directly comes through, the patterned windows adds interest to the building by shapes and patterns of shadow wen light is hit upon it. i have too placed  tracing paper material which acted as a window pane to minimize the amount of light being able to pass through at some areas, creating a opaque effect. Subtraction of walls was also added in the roof where it allow sunlight to permeate the space during the daytime. In my photoshoped reimagined view of my model i have designed it as a shed where in the daytime the natural light creates a atmosphere of vibrancy and warmth in the space. I painted my material of cardboard in black paint to allow it to be more visually clean.

Design concept

During  daytime where natural lighting comes onto the building, an atmosphere of vitality and vibrancy is created.  While as the daily cycle comes to an end and the sunsets, artificial lights manifests onto the space, creating a high contrast between light and shadow, bringing in a new atmosphere

Reflection

Through the making of the model i have come to an understanding how the use of light can communicate emotions and atmosphere to a space. white surfaces such as the floor in the model can very well compliment light and display shadows and rays while dark surfaces such as the wall in the model absorbs the light and doesn't allow the manner of light to visually affect itself.

what i have learnt with using corrugated cardboard is that its benefit is that is able to create sturdy structures, however the material appeared to be not serviceable at times at it is not very clean when cutting it. Thus long periods of time was spent trying to make the edges smoother by using very fine and small knifes to cut out spare bits and pieces which the cardboard leaves behind.  Yet due to the lack of materials that i can access , i tried to make the most effective use of the corrugated cardboard.
